Did you have a nice weekend?
May. 16th, 2022 10:51 pmI hope at least some of you got to see the eclipse. It was too cloudy here in DC.
Mine was pretty good. Friday evening, there was an art walk in Georgetown, the first since 2020. Seven studios opened their doors for visitors. There were a couple of old favorites, a new one offering Congolese art, and the Central African Union offered art and dancing. The Congolese one was very Afro-futurism. Their motto is "Debrouillez-vous" which roughly means "you figure it out."
Tis the season for migrating birds. The herring are running and the birds feast on them. Last night, there were three herons lined up, looking a little like meerkats and occasionally grabbing a snack. The cormorants are around all year. They are diving birds. Sometimes they perch on tiop of the buoys and stretch out their wings to dry them. Looks very odd, like a person stretching.
Books I've read: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. I'm way behind everyone else. It started slowly for me then sucked me right in. The narrative style took some getting used to. I've already borrowed the next one in the series.
The Woman Who Smashed Code by Jason Fagone. A couple really. Kind of the American version of Bletchley Park. He worked on highly classified codes. She worked with the Coast Guard, first to nab booze runners during the 20s and 30s, and then on ULTRA, beating Japanese ciphers. Another woman whose contributions are being recognized late.
And I've started Organizing for The Rest of Us by Dana White. Because getting organized is never-ending.
