I've been reading an interesting series by Charlaine Harris. It features Sookie, a barmaid who can read minds. Everyone thinks she's nuts. In this universe, vampires came out of hiding when the Japanese invented synthetic blood. She can't read vampire minds so finds them very restful. She has assorted friends and enemies. They are part science fiction, part mystery story, and kind of interesting psychologically. I'm not sure I rec them though. On the one hand I absolutely gobbled them up. They are very well written. She writes smoking hot (het) sex scenes and her characters are quite memorable. She raises an interesting question - if vampires are real, what other beings might be real - and answers it. On the other hand, it's a little too convenient that all these supernatural beings fall in love with her. I'm not too crazy about the way her abilities are used and abused. And there's a lot of Sookie whumping. The first one is Dead Like Me. I guess I'd say give it a try and see if this is your cup of tea.
