A visit to Congressional Cemetery. It was pretty gray and gloomy on Saturday afternoon when I was there but very peaceful. If you stand at the right spots, there's no trace of the highways or surrounding buildings. Founded in 1807, it's best known for the graves of Sousa and Hoover. Except for standard tablets, there are more obelisks than any other memorial. There are 171 cenotaphs commemorating senators and representatives who died in office but only 59 are actually buried here. A number of people related to the Lincoln assassination are buried here as well.

It was so gray, I did play with enhancements a little :)

The Halls were one of my favorite gravesites. The mother and one sister are buried under the angel and Mary and another sister are under the maiden. She was one of the most successful bordello madams in Civil War-era DC. NMAI was built on the bordello's site. They found champagne bottle shards when excavating the foundation.

This is one of the oddest looking monuments I saw. It includes a Greek helm with a small bird supporting the plume, a sword (military career), winged hourglass (passage of time), butterfly within a circled snake (resurrection and eternity of the soul), wreath (victory over death), and a cross (Christian faith). The shaft is supported by lion's paws.

The totem is a memorial to the Pentagon 9/11 victims carved by the Lummi Indians of Washington State. The left shows grandfather sun topped by father bear topped by an eagle of peace. The right shows grandmother moon on the back of a turtle topped by mother bear topped by a war eagle with a man inside its mouth. The theme is all Americans under one roof.

This one is just sad. Children often died so young in those days. Three in one family.

And all the stone angels made me think of Doctor Who. That part was creepy.
