Weekly book post
Mar. 6th, 2012 04:13 pmLabyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges. Short stories and essays. I picked this one up because William Gibson recommended it. His writing is dense but very beautiful. Metaphysical, fantastical, a bit surreal at times.
DC Noir edited by George Pelecanos. Collection of short stories by various authors over the last 75 years. Focused on the psychological aspects of noir, rather than crime or visuals. It was pretty interesting. The stories are all set in and around or about DC.
Here on Earth by Tim Flannery. History and speculation about the origins of life, evolution of earth, future of the planet, Gaia, and ecology.
Good Bones and Simple Murders by Margaret Atwood. If I wrote down all the sentences that resonated with me I'd end up recopying half the book. It's a collection of very short writings with unusual viewpoints."Making a Man" is hysterical, "The Little Red Hen" is quite pointed, but each one packs a punch. She also did the illustrations. A quick read, but then you have to read it over again.
