Jun. 4th, 2009 04:09 pmInternet use has tripled from 1997 to 2007, according to the US Census Bureau, Just 18% of households used the internet in 1997; 62% do so now.
Which got me thinking. Where was I in 1997? Both in Internet use and otherwise.
I was using Windows 3.0/Windows 95 and was totally impressed when my boss showed off Mosaic. I got an AOL dial-up account at home. At work, I was helping the Head Start Bureau transition from a text-based bulletin board system to the World Wide Web. I maintained a small site on AOL for Head Start programs and was really pleased when they decided to incorporate my stuff into the official site. I was watching the X-Files and participating on their official BBS.
And of course, I was watching The Sentinel (and ST: Voyager) on Wednesday nights on UPN. But I never found the fandom or Sentinel fanfic until after the end of the third season.
Things were still pretty text-based back then. All the Usenet forums were in text. And it's only ten years ago. Ten years from now, who know where we will be?
So what about you? How tech-savvy were you ten years ago? And how has fandom encouraged you to learn the techie bits?
