Saturday was Veteran's Day. I always think of the day when I was actually in Westminster Abbey at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Poppies everywhere. A very moving short sermon. A day later was the official ceremony, also rather moving. Lots of vets in uniform, a traditional costermonger all decked out, and I saw the Royal Family - a big deal for an American on her first visit to London.

Even though the farmshare season is over, I'm still trying to stay on the healthy eating track. I've had the worst craving for pizza. I found a reasonably healthy version on (of all places) the Top Chef website. Take a circle of whole wheat pita bread, spread it with a couple of tablespoons of tomato sauce (I seasoned it with my very own dried thyme and oregano). I sliced some turkey sausage thinly and arranged it on top, then topped that with freshly grated lowfat mozzarella cheese. Warm it until the cheese melts (i used the toaster oven set at 350). Yummy and very satisfying.

I've been watching Top Chef, as it comes on in the same time slot as Project Runway. I've been pleasantly surprised that there are some recipes I actually can/want to make. But so far it hasn't been as good as last year's. For one thing, there's been a lot more on-screen drinking. One of the contestants seems to be drinking himself right off the show. I like my grinks as well as the next person, but why wreck a one-in-a-lifetime chance like that? There's also a ton of backbiting. I'll keep watching for a while, but I may put it on hiatus and then just catch up on one of the Bravo marathons.

Doctor Who was great on Friday - the episode with the Wire and Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Doctor Ten made a good-looking Elvis. Numb3rs was really good too. How cool was it that they used Bill Nye the Science Guy as a math guy. I liked the baseball stuff, Don being a bit angsty, Megan and Larry and the red cowboy pajamas. At the very end there was a look between Don and Charlie that almost made me believe.....

Normally at Christmastime they put up sparkly white lights in the trees around the mall. This year they've gone for something rather different. They've wrapped the tree trunks with these sort of lavendar lights. I don't know if they are more energy-efficient or what, but they look really odd. My letter to Santa

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last month on a flight to LA, I stole the emergency flight information card (-40 points). Last Tuesday I donated bone marrow to [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse in a life-saving procedure (300 points). In July I caught a purse-snatcher who stole [livejournal.com profile] alibongo's purse (30 points). Last Wednesday I helped [livejournal.com profile] rhianne see the light (8 points). In March I broke [livejournal.com profile] wneleh's X-Box (-12 points).

Overall, I've been nice (286 points). For Christmas I deserve a pony!
