Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] duffy_99. Hope your day was a good one!

Saturday was my nephew's fourth birthday. Nothing like running around with the little guy to make me feel young again. I gave him a gigantic pair of boxing gloves that came with sound effects. He likes beating up his aunts. :)

I'm going to a few more networking-type events, meeting people, seeing what's out there. On Sunday, my friend K. and I went to a brunch sponsored by the Jane Austen Society. It kind of fit what I've been reading lately - Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. The food was just wonderful - fresh fruit, custom omelets, grilled salmon. The speaker was supposed to talk about the great English country houses of Jane Austen's time. She was very passionate about her subject, but gave new meaning to the term "But I digress." Drunken cows couldn't follow her meandering path. Eventually, K. leaned over and suggested an early departure.

We headed out to an early afternoon event aimed at authors and editors. K. is also a member of that group. This one fell into the pit of disorganization and never recovered. The outgoing president kept interrupting remarks by the incoming president as she remembered "just one more thing." It finally broke up and we started mingling. There was actually some interesting conversations going on, when the outgoing president decided to restructure things. Instead of letting us chat and mingle at our own pace, she separated us into three groups. We all had to say a few sentences about ourselves. Then instead of letting us chat, we went back into the big group and one person from each group reported on the makeup of the three little groups. K. and I escaped out the back door when we realized it wasn't going to change.

So not so productive, but K. and I had fun talking about books and things. She's pushing me to get a new job (good for her!) and she talks about her efforts to declutter her house. Her husband is the worst packrat I've ever met and that's saying something.

But it was a good weekend. Didn't do as much cleaning as I should have.
