I saw Terry Pratchett tonight!
Sep. 10th, 2004 11:45 pmForgive me while I squee.
He did not disappoint. A few months ago a friend introduced me to the joys of his books. Part science fiction, part satire, wholly clever, and great reads. I had to go when I heard he would do a book signing at a nearby Borders. I'm an obsessive notetaker, so here's just a few highlights.
First, he's rather unassuming in appearance and he has a lovely accent. His t-shirt said "Tolkien is dead. JK Rowlings said No. Philip Pulliam wasn't available. I'm Terry Pratchett." Got laughs.
He apologized to anyone who'd attended WorldCon because he would tell a few of the same stories.
He said he'd had exploratory heart surgery. The doctor's radio was playing "Bat Out of Hell" and he was watching his own heart on TV monitors. After the surgery, a lovely nurse came in and pounded on his groin from time to time. For 10,000 pounds he expected a bit more.
The doctor was a bit worried because during the surgery Terry kept saying there was a man in the corner with sandwiches. He riffed on his "near-sandwich" experience, saying "don't go to the sandwiches."
He got a medal, got a chocolate simulacrum, and gave the folks heart attacks when he pretended to eat his medal.
He likes libraries, says science fiction is a gateway to everything else (Amen brother!)
He took a few questions. Funny about that too. He observed that there's always a few seconds of embarrassed silence after he asks for questions so he filled it up himself.
He talked happily about his project (Good Omens)with Neil Gaiman but said it would probably not happen again. Too many "people" would have to be involved.
He did a hilarious little riff about the demon that puts Satan's messages on LPs when they are played backward. Really funny.
He talked about trying to trademark Death (my favorite character for sure)
He won't do another time travel story. Can't do that unless you're Star Trek. Heeee.
Going Postal is next book. After that one called Thud with Vimes.
Wonderful and very touching story about seeing Orion when he was in the Southern Hemisphere.
All in all an amazingly wonderful evening that I cannot capture. See him if he comes to your town. And try his books. Start with Thief of Time (a personal favorite)
