Creating Your Online Persona
Aug. 7th, 2004 12:39 amI finally finished writing my article "Creating Your Online Persona." It was posted about 2 weeks ago. I got really good feedback on it too.
The concept is that in certain tech circles, our online personas travel farther, last longer, and can even overwrite our in-person impressions. (BTW, I did make a distinction between personal and professional personas. I keep mine pretty separate.) Ever since "to Google" became a commonly accepted expresiion I realized my online professional persona needs to be even more professional than my real life persona. On your professional email lists, you need to be really, well, professional, because the impression will last much longer and even be searchable.
The funny thing is that after it was up, I became the living embodiment of the good side of the article. Good personas reap good results. I've been jobhunting. I signed up with a contractor who knew me mostly from my online stuff. She recommended me to someone who knew me mostly as an online person, but then also met me once in RL. She hired me within 24 hours based on recommendations from people I knew in my online persona.
I guess I'm just saying I'm glad I paid as much attention to my online stuff as I did to my personal presentation. It worked out well for me.
