Bimbos of the Death Sun
Jun. 7th, 2004 11:14 amI saw a comment in someone else's friends list (and now I can't remember where :() about someone looking for stereotypes of science fiction fans and scifi cons. I immediately remembered Sharyn McCrumb's Bimbos of the Death Sun. If you like humorous mystery stories, it's well worth reading. Some parts are laugh-out-loud funny.
There's one part where an English professor is critiquing fanfic. One pile of badly written Heinlein, one pile of sexist stories, one pile badly written fantasy. There's an arrogant scifi author with spot-on characterization. There's a whole section on how fans dress up and which fans choose which costumes. There's another spot-on bit about a fan who's famous for being a fan. There's a folk singer who winds up filking.
It was written before the World Wide Web, so there are some jokes about text-based communications that might whoosh by.
Oh, heck, the whole thing is a riot and worth looking for in the library or Amazon. She also writes great mysteries set in the Appalachians.
