This one was a bakeoff for the floor I work on. From the top, homemade biscotti (3rd place), Key lime pie (1st place), guava bites (2nd place), flan and peanut butter cookie at the bottom. treats 2 I spent the rest of the afternoon in a sugar stupor.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and/or a wonderful Tuesday.

I woke up this morning to a light dusting of snow. It looked beautiful but it turned to freezing rain. I'm happy to be sitting inside with the doggies. If anyone has to be on the road drive carefully!

I went down to the Ellipse and got there just after sunset. It was packed. They had different school choirs singing carols while I was there. You could see the White House flag was at half-staff but people were in good spirits.

Capitol Christmas Tree

I was walking along Constitution Avenue after the lectures and stopped to capture this. Everyone was down by the Ellipse for the lighting of the National Christmas tree, so it was pretty empty.

Sunday was a clean all the things day for me, even the kitchen and bathroom. I also did some grocery shopping - the shelves were pretty bare.

I went to a very nice Parade of Boats along the DC Waterfront. The boats sailed up the Potomac from Alexdria and then paraded along the Washington Channel. Lots of the boats docked at the marina were decorated but the parading ones wre really elaborate. I think my favorite was the Peace, Love and Rock and Roll boat. It had a heart and a peace sign and blasted Jimi Hendrix. They also had a sign "Make Love not Wake" (a sailor's joke).

Internet access is a little iffy this week but I hope to post some pictures and the book post a little later. In the meantime, here's the new preview poster for the upcoming Star Trek movie:

spoilers, sweetie )

Ian McKellan was making the rounds of the morning talk shows. The beginnings of hobbity goodness for the next two weeks!

like an exploding Christmas tree!

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang staged one of his "explosion events," to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sackler Gallery

A live pine tree erupted in fireworks, followed by black ink-like smoke that mimicked traditional Chinese brush drawings. A tree-shaped cloud of smoke was meant to create an image of two trees, one real and one of smoke. It kind of worked until the breezes got hold of it.
