Final (for now anyway!) post of bad puns and jokes!! And annoyingly, there's two music-related ones I missed when making the musical post! Ah well, have them now instead...

More groans )

Because heaven knows my writing has been crap recently. But I've been reading some fun soul mark/soul name AUs in Blakes 7 and Pride and Prejudice fandoms, and I got to thinking how I could do that in TS. I don't know that I want to write a full length story about it, but a few snippety vignettes or missing scenes might be... interesting? Yes. Probably subversion but not absolutely, because I do have ~feelings about destiny in TS fic - but it doesn't get much more Destiny with a Capital D than the soul mate trope, now does it?

It's the last day of my vacation-staycation-weekend.

I went to the State Fair on Tuesday afternoon, and did a quick skim through the various exhibits and the animal barn, had some bad fair food, then saw the Queen cover band, Queen Nation. I've been wanting to see them for a couple of years, but they are usually scheduled for Con*Strict weekend. I did enjoy them, and the crowd singing, but the lead fellow just didn't have a voice as good as Freddie Mercury's. Good to have achieved; don't need to repeat.

I had dinner with one friend on Tuesday at the Old Spaghetti Factory (we both love the mizithra cheese), tea with a group of friends on Thursday afternoon, and dinner at another friend's house on Friday, with the old Whovian gang. It's been good to see people.

I have not done as much as it feels like I could have done, but I've made an effort to be relaxed and not overdo, so I will be happy that I stuck to that promise. I have the sheetrock repair scheduled, which I have been ignoring for several years now, so I'm going to call that a win.

Writing is strange, isn't it? Saturday afternoon, I had that, I'm not going to finish anything significant in the house/chores realm, so I might as well write on this print-out of the second half of The Prequel that I've been carrying around for a couple of months now. I read it over, polished some sentences, added a few here and there, and typed in the changes. It's at 11,848 words, at least halfway through, and I'm very vague about what should happen in the rest of the fic. So I looked at the Qui/Obi I wrote recently, which was 3,600 words, and written in a day and a half. Why can't I do that all the time? Why do some stories take so long?

Did you ever have a time where you kinda drew a line in the sand with a friend, and the friend's reaction was basically, "Okay," and on one hand, you were grateful not to get into a big argument over something that stressed you a lot, but on the other hand, there was a sense of... Huh. I think I wish she'd cared enough to make a token effort to argue. She didn't. I handled that on Friday and still feel unsettled by it.

But one more fun thing today, meeting up with friends to see The Mousetrap. I saw it, several decades ago. I do remember Who Done It, but little else. It'll be good to see it again.

A random collection of music-related bad puns and jokes, mainly grabbed from a FB friend who likes to post bad jokes and make us all wonder when we're getting a 'groan' button to press!!

These jokes cover a wide range of musical tastes, over the decades, and so apologies if you don't get all of them!

Lots of groans ahead )

Guess who just got a letter saying there her mortgage is completely paid off!!!??? They used part of my remaining escrow to pay it off and are sending me the remainder in a check.

I bought the house in '91, refinanced to a lower interest rate in '02, and now it's done. It's mine, free and clear. It's an amazing feeling.

New Cat already has a new name - Lap Cat.

I was even sitting with one foot tucked under me and had to adjust because my foot was falling asleep. Usually when an animal is on my lap and I shift, that animal gets huffy and leaps off. But no, Lap Cat adjusted with me. Whenever I need him to get off, he demonstrates that magical ability where a cat becomes boneless and weighs 10 more pounds. He has the lap now and he is not surrendering it!

this is great

someone commented on The First Thirty Minutes, a H50 TS fusion (which becomes a xo). It's the first time they've read a TS based fic, and they've watched an ep and they're hooked \o/. They asked if I've watched the series or researched it to get teh info?

and I'm like Memory Lane!....

Holy fuck, I watched it, thanks to the mates in the States, when it was televised! Via snail mail, they posted ropey VHS tapes in NTSC format that I watched on my PAL (UK format player), which supposedly was capable of showing USA formatted VHS tapes. The colours were constantly weird and the screen sometimes wandered off the side of the telly.

When the series was cancelled, on a cliff-hanger, I (one of many) called the US and expressed my discontent, and the lady I spoke to was very surprised! We -- the fans there was a lot of unhappy fans -- got a final season, which tied up the loose ends.

AH MEMORIES

And since I'm posting again...

When the Gospel of Minimalism Collides With Daily Life

Some of you of you might remember my great ongoing downsizing/minimizing project.  And while I do think minimizing has value, it only does to a point.  Just like having too much stuff and buying just to buy is one extreme in the wrong direction, I feel like a lot of the minimizing blogs out there take it to the other, equally impractical or even harmful extreme.

"Throw out all your pens and keep only one!"  Yeah, but that's really wasteful and assumes you're in the financial situation that you could go out and buy yourself one pen every time you run out of ink.

"Get rid of all your kid's toys!  They're have more fun playing with wooden spoons and thinks you have around the house." Trust me, they won't.  Plus randomly throwing away all a kid's possessions is more than a little traumatic (and you can explain minimalism all you want, from the kid's pov it's random).

Like most things, it's a balance.  Amelia had a birthday party recently (can you believe she's 2?) and got a shitload of toys.  This was followed by me donating a large bag full of toys she seldom or never plays with anymore.  I need to do the same for Finn soon (especially with his birthday coming up).  In general we do own too many things and I do want to downsize what we own, but to a sane level.  Because the truth is, this is awfully hard to live in:

Oh! Also...

I have received my public librarian certificate!  I'm not certain yet if that's what I'd like to go into, but it does open up options.  Pay is stagnant at my new job, benefits aren't anything special and, more importantly, they've been making zero contributions to retirement for a year now and it was low before that.

I like the people here.  It's a pleasant, fairly flexible place to work.  They bill themselves, correctly, as child friendly.  But I've been feeling kinda stagnant here.  My indecision continues about staying or going but I'm trying to keep options open.

I went on vacation, well more like staycation, with my mom a week ago.  It was fun, frustrating, exhausting and pretty much everything else that comes out of vacation with my mother.  She came up with my niece and two nephews and the kids all had a blast.  She rented a house by the lake and Finn abandoned us for the week to sleep over with his cousins.  My mom had us on the go from bright and early in the morning till well into the evening.  It think were all still recovering.

The Boy (aka my husband, not my son) started his new job three weeks back and it's working out very well for him.  They don't pay or have benefits kick in until you've been working there for 40 days, so we're riding on my pay and savings until then and on my benefits alone as well, but after that, his job's benefits are better than either mine or his previous job and he'll get paid more so that's good.  We are in a position we can absorb the wait time, but I wonder about those that couldn't.  I mean, we certainly could not earlier in our careers.

My garden's growing.  I might be able to harvest peas, but haven't really had much chance to get out there in the last couple of days.  The person that opens the library has been out, so I've been coming in early, then getting the kids fed and driving them to track in the evening.  Tomorrow I'm taking a half day to take my son to the eye doctor's so I'm hoping to get a chance to go out there soon
